About the client

Composure is the company behind Sound Blanket Hub, a digital platform to improve the well-being of senior living communities. It delivers personalized sounds to help medical staff improve older adults' healthcare outcomes and quality of life.Their evidence-based sound sequences are designed to support better sleep hygiene and performance, especially for memory care residents. The platform reproduces calm-inducing and sound-masking sounds that help cue bedtime, fall asleep faster and get better sleep all night.

The problem

The project aimed to create an app for care home nurses and Composure’s admin team to control the sounds at each facility. The app needed to be intuitive for busy nurses, allowing them to easily program sounds, while also providing remote access for the technical team to manage configurations and checks.

The Solution

We designed a web application that serves as a centralized portal where community health staff and administrative team members can securely access and manage the custom-built sound ecosystem. This ecosystem includes a network of speakers for each community, responsible for playing sound blanket compositions. It also features controls to program, pause/resume sounds, make volume adjustments, and switch sound compositions per speaker/per group.

The Process

1. Discovery

We started with an agile discovery phase, using user interviews and competitive research to identify adoption challenges in the healthcare space. Insights guided the product roadmap and aligned it with ABIF’s strategy.

2. UX/UI

Through iterative UATs (User Acceptance Testing)  and feedback loops, we refined core features and validated usability.
User testing of high-fidelity prototypes validated an intuitive and scalable solution that aligns with clinical workflows.

Hardware integrations
We integrated the application with the speakers’ custom APIs, enabling direct remote control and programmatic access to device functions.
Composure staff management panel showing role-based access for multi-location healthcare teams
Multi-Location Access & Role-Based Management
Healthcare staff and administrators can access the sound system based on their assigned permissions. This enables organizations to manage multiple locations, assign responsibilities, and oversee access and control from a single platform.
Composure remote audio management dashboard with staff roles and room assignments
Remote Healthcare Audio System Management
Each health staff member or administrator can check in real-time and remotely the functioning of the sound ecosystem by differentiating rooms, soundscapes, and patients individually.
Composure soundscape control screen playing Ocean audio for a resident's room
Flexible Soundscape Management
Soundscapes can be paused, stopped, reactivated, changed, or programmed independently in each room, or grouped by rooms/speakers.
MPL daily tracker screen with 5 of 12 metrics completed, prompting the patient to log sleep, mood and energy, symptoms, significant events, and medication changes
Each patient can track every health metric that matters without relying on paper and manual intake.
MPL patient data screen showing weekly trend charts for ketones and mood/energy across cardiometabolic and mental health categories, with toggleable metrics
Labs and clinical documents can be uploaded in one place. The app processes information and stores it in a way the clinician and patients can monitor changes through time.
MPL patient app showing daily tracking of movement, meals, and alcohol intake, with connected wearable devices including Keto Mojo, Withings, and Apple Health syncing automatically
Wearables can be synced for continuous health monitoring in a very simple way. This reduces errors when uploading data allowing for more reliable care.
MPL patient app messaging screen with direct chat to care team members and a weekly schedule of upcoming clinical assessments including the Yale-Brown and EMA scales
Built-in messaging keeps patients connected with their care team and upcoming appointments maximising adherence to the treatment and study retention

Composure per-room soundscape configuration panel with theme assignment for individual residents
Tailored audio environments
Soundscapes can be configured independently for each room, allowing care teams to tailor audio settings to specific patient needs and care environments. This personalization provides greater control over the sound experience while supporting a more individualized approach to care.
Composure real-time room status monitor showing active, scheduled, and connection error states
Real-time room monitoring
Administrators can monitor the real-time status of every room from a centralized platform, providing visibility into connected speakers, active soundscapes, and room-level configurations without needing to access each room individually.
Composure remote volume control dashboard for managing audio levels across rooms and speaker groups
Centralized sound control
Volume can be adjusted remotely at the room level or across groups of speakers, giving authorized staff precise control over audio levels from the platform. This allows changes to be made based on the needs of each environment without requiring staff to be physically present in the room.

Why it matters

Composure set out to improve sleep and well-being for older adults in senior living communities through evidence-based soundscapes. Light-it helped turn that vision into a centralized platform that gives care teams control over the sound environment in every room, while enabling remote management of the underlying speaker network. The result is a digital sound ecosystem designed to support better care while giving providers the control and infrastructure to manage it at scale.
