About the client

The Oxford Mindfulness Foundation is a global nonprofit on a mission to make mindfulness a tool for well-being. Through research, education, and advocacy, they bring evidence-based mindfulness practices to individuals and communities worldwide.
At the core of their work is a simple yet powerful belief: when people cultivate awareness, kindness, and presence, they can improve not only their own lives but the world around them. Princess Noor bint Asem of Jordan recently joined as an ambassador to help champion their vision.

The Challenge

Oxford Mindfulness needed a platform that combined courses, guided practices, and multimedia content—all within just four months. The challenge? Balancing speed, performance, and an engaging user experience to ensure long-term impact.

The Solution

Light-it designed and developed a mobile app that makes mindfulness more accessible than ever. Whether users want to explore mindfulness theory or jump straight into guided meditation, the app offers an accessible experience for all levels, from beginners to experienced meditators.

With a mix of audiovisual content, written materials, and structured courses, the platform provides a flexible learning experience. Its freemium model allows users to access free content, while premium content is available via subscriptions or one-time payments, ensuring accessibility for everyone.

The app also needed to include specific features for individuals with Visual Snow Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that can impact an individual's vision, hearing, cognition, sensory processing, and quality of life.

The process & workflow

The app was the result of multiple teams collaborating closely, each working at the same time within their own area of expertise. By combining different skills and knowledge, we managed to get the perfect solution. The teams and services involved were:

1. Product
discovery

During this dynamic one-month phase, we engaged in weekly brainstorming sessions to delve into the challenges and pain points that needed to be addressed with the solution. This stage is where priorities were set and agreed upon.

2. Product Strategy
& MVP Definition

We created a clear roadmap for Oxford Mindfulness MVP based on the technical knowledge of both Oxford Mindfulness and Light-it.

The project needed substantial research and ideation to establish the scope and evaluate requirements, such as incorporating accessibility for the Visual Snow community.

3. UX/UI design

Design was a key aspect throughout the whole project. It was an iterative process where we strategized, sketched, and refined our ideas repetitively until we crafted a precise wireframe to enhance our users’ mindfulness experience and the Oxford Mindfulness team.

4. Development & QA

The team brought the product to life, ensuring Oxford Mindfulness was engaged every step of the way. The team refined the initial concepts, creating detailed mockups that represented the final solution, along with interactive prototypes for key screens. We kicked off with the MVP, putting it to the test, and kept refining it through regular iterations.

Scalable digital mental health platform for mindfulness programs

The platform is built with a robust architecture to support secure content delivery, user management, and personalized learning experiences. The app enables multimedia delivery, structured program journeys, progress tracking, and high-quality user engagement while maintaining reliability, performance, and flexibility for future growth.

Oxford Mindfulness course progress tracker showing 75% completion with gamification elements
Gamification to maximise adherence
Users can easily access courses, articles and practices, all in one place, while tracking their progress and staying updated on newly published content.
The platform incorporates gamification elements to motivate users, encouraging them to maintain their streak and stay engaged.

different content formats supported
The platform is built to support scalable, multi-format content delivery, including text-based resources, audio, video, interactive assessments, live streaming, and webinars. Its architecture is designed to handle high-concurrency experiences, enabling organizations to deliver real-time digital health content to large user populations reliably while maintaining performance.
Oxford Mindfulness accessibility features screen with color theme and blue light filter settings for Visual Snow Syndrome
Accessibility-First Design & Development
Oxford Mindfulness partnered with the Visual Snow Initiative to create this app together and bring resources to those who suffer from this condition. The app includes a specially designed and optimized course and different themes, such as dark mode or blue light mode, that allow users with visual snow syndrome to get the best experience with the app.

A provider-specific portal with every metric that counts

To better support Oxford Mindfulness’s needs, we developed a centralized admin portal that provides full control over content, users, and course distribution. The portal enables administrators to create company-specific learning plans, manage access permissions, curate mindfulness resources, and deliver tailored programs at scale while maintaining efficient oversight of the entire digital wellness ecosystem.

Centralized admin management
The centralized admin dashboard gives teams a single place to manage users, partners, and content creation and uploads. By consolidating these workflows into one platform, teams can efficiently update resources, maintain accurate information, optimize operations, and ensure a consistent experience across all users and organizations.
Oxford Mindfulness user access control panel showing free and premium content permission management
Granular access control
The platform provides teams with visibility into user access, allowing them to manage free and premium content permissions from a single dashboard. This simplifies freemium model management by enabling efficient access control, user segmentation, and updates to content availability.

the story

Why it matters

What began as a nonprofit's mission to make mindfulness research accessible became a tool people now open in 170 countries. The Oxford Mindfulness Foundation set out to prove that awareness and presence could measurably improve mental health, and Light-it helped turn that research into an app people actually use every day.The bar was high: an app that felt as credible as the science behind it, and as easy to use as any consumer product. We helped them clear that bar in four months, building a platform that meets beginners where they are and gives experienced practitioners room to go deeper. It also meant designing specifically for the Visual Snow community, so a rare condition wouldn't stand between someone and the practice.
